Studio task · fictional worked example

Rehearse your storefront launch before real buyers arrive.

The method: be the buyer, twice

Run the script once on desktop and once on a phone, as a stranger would: no saved logins, no admin shortcuts, no "I know where the link is." Every step gets a pass/fail and a note. Anything that isn't a clean pass is a launch blocker until fixed.

The rehearsal script

Part 1. Checkout

  1. Land cold. Open the product page in a private window. Is the price, what you get, and the guarantee clear in under 30 seconds?
  2. Click buy. Does checkout open, show the right product name and price, and complete without console errors?
  3. Check the payment environment. Use Stripe test mode to exercise payments, declines, refunds, and webhook handling. Follow your provider's guidance for any final live-payment check, with the account owner's approval.
  4. Check the receipt. Does the buyer get a receipt with the right business name, amount, and a way to contact you?

Part 2. Delivery

  1. Follow the success path. After payment, does the buyer land somewhere that clearly explains how to get the product?
  2. Download as a stranger. Download the file on a different device or browser profile. Does it open? Is it the current version?
  3. Read the delivery email. If buyers get an email with access instructions, read it on a phone. Are the links tappable and correct?

Part 3. Errors and cancellation

  1. Kill the payment. Abandon checkout halfway. Is there a sane way back, and does nothing charge?
  2. Use a declined test card. Does the page explain the failure and how to try again?
  3. Request the refund. Walk your own refund path. How many steps? How long until the money moves? Record the steps and the provider's stated refund timing.

Part 4. Mobile and policies

  1. Repeat checkout and delivery on a phone. Check that inputs, payment buttons, and download links fit the screen and work by touch.
  2. Read your own terms. Check that the refund window, included files, and support details agree across the page, policies, and checkout.

Worked example: what a rehearsal catches

A fictional example of two failures the checklist can catch.

A seller checks a $29 workbook before announcing it. The download returns a 404 because the file was renamed. A declined test payment displays an internal error code instead of useful instructions. The seller fixes both issues and repeats the affected checks before launching.

Questions

Launch rehearsal, answered.

Should I test with a real payment?

Start in test mode. Stripe test payments can exercise declines, refunds, and webhook handling. Follow your payment provider's guidance for an authorized live check; test mode does not establish live payout timing.

How long does a rehearsal take?

About an hour for the full script on a simple digital-product storefront: the purchase path, delivery, receipts, mobile checks, and the three failure paths.

What problems should I look for?

Broken download links after payment, receipts going to spam or the wrong address, mobile checkout layout breaks, and discount or tax misconfiguration. All are rehearsable.

Do I need the rehearsal if I used a hosted platform?

Yes, the platform handles payments, but your product files, delivery emails, download pages, and mobile layout are still yours to verify.
